Russian girl`s death: Two waiters under scanner

Goa Police claimed to have managed to piece together the last few hours of the deceased Russian girl, who was found dead on Railway track at Revora village, 15 kms from here.

Panaji, May 10: Goa Police claimed to have managed
to piece together the last few hours of the deceased Russian
girl, who was found dead on Railway track at Revora village,
15 kms from here.

Police are also on look out for two Indian waiters who
had befriended her. Apparently, the duo, working at Baga
beach, have recently left their respective jobs.

Nineteen-year-old Elena Sukhanova`s mutilated corpse was
found on the railway track on May 8, three kilometres away
from Thivim railway station.

"On that night, she took a cab from a discotheque at Baga
and asked the driver to drop her to Thivim railway station,"
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sammy Tavares, said.

He said that before leaving for the station, she had
dinner with six other Russians, who were interrogated by the
police. "All the six have left the country. We have recorded
their statements," Tavares said.

Tavares said that Elena after leaving the hotel went to
discotheque and from there hired a cab to go to Thivim railway
station, where she reached around 3.40 am.

Police have tracked down and interrogated the driver who
has confirmed that Elena told him that she is travelling to
Mumbai. Deepening the mystery over the death, police confirmed
that they have not found any ticket in her purse.

The authorities have now written to Konkan Railway
Corporation Limited (KRCL) to cross check whether she really
brought one.

The Russian girl had arrived in the state on April 19 and
was supposed to leave on May three. Police stated that she
preferred to stay back.

The girl had disappeared from the hotel for two days
forcing the management to lodge missing complaint with Mapusa
police.

Elena resurfaced on May six and deposed before police
that she was touring with one `Winnie,` a waiter in a local
beach shack.

Police investigations have also zeroed in on another
waiter working in the hotel where she had checked in. But the
waiter has left for his native in Himachal Pradesh, ten days
back. Tavares said that the police have registered a case of
unnatural death while they are open to book it as murder,
if they get any evidence.
The Russian consulate has taken cognisance of the case
but has refused to comment at this juncture. "We are waiting
for the postmortem report. We are concerned at loss of young
life. On receipt of postmortem report we will scrutinise the
details and comment," Vikram Varma, counsel for Russian
consulate, said.
