Ahmedabad: Swine flu claimed nine more lives in Gujarat, taking the toll to 256 since January this year.

Apart from these deaths, 212 new swine flu cases have been recorded across Gujarat Friday, taking the total number of cases to 4,162 so far.

"Gujarat has reported nine swine flu deaths today, taking the total number of deaths to 256, while 212 new H1N1 (swine flu) cases were reported today," an official press release said here today.

Out of these nine deaths, three were reported from Ahmedabad while one each were reported from Surat, Vadodara, Surendranagar, Gandhinagar, Amreli and Banaskantha district, it said.

The Gujarat state government also claimed that 2,719 patients have been cured till date.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela lambasted the BJP-led Gujarat government today over increasing swine flu deaths during his speech during the ongoing budget session.

"During the recently concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations, the government invited NRIs from all over the world, but they were not scanned at the airport. As a result, they brought swine flu virus here. The government could have saved people if proper steps were taken," Vaghela said.
