As many as 73 new cases of swine flu have surfaced in Uttar Pradesh taking the total number of people affected from the contagious disease to 522 even as there was no report of any death due to it in the state in the past 24 hours.

Lucknow: As many as 73 new cases of swine flu have surfaced in Uttar Pradesh taking the total number of people affected from the contagious disease to 522 even as there was no report of any death due to it in the state in the past 24 hours.

"73 new patients of H1N1 virus have been detected in Uttar Pradesh. Of them 63 are from Lucknow, five from Varanasi, two from Bareilly and one each from Shahjahanpur, Bareilly and Rampur districts," a health department official said here.

With this, the total number of cases in the state has shot up to 522, the maximum of 422 being reported in Lucknow, where leave of all the health department officials has been cancelled, he said.

According to health department sources, 1,381 patients were screened and out of them 522 have tested positive while 12 persons have died so far due to the H1N1 in the state.

The deadly virus has affected 21 districts. Six deaths have been reported from Lucknow, two from Kanpur and one each from Saharanpur, Bareilly, Unnaor and Badaun districts.

The state government has directed the local bodies and municipal corporations to launch a cleanliness campaign throughout the state.
