All women on this planet menstruate, yet no one talks about it. A very normal bilogical process and a necessary phenomenon in a woman's life often remains a subject of taboo and an ignored agenda. The fact that this issue remains a taboo especially in countries like India makes girls under confident about their bodies and makes them unable to articulate their needs.

To break one such taboo, a coalition of international and national organisations observed the first-ever Menstrual Hygiene Day today. From this year onwards, the day will be celebrated on May 28 (the 28th day of the 5th month of every year), because a woman's menstrual cycle generally repeats in 28 days and she has the menstrual for five days a month.

Supported by more than 130 amazing partners worldwide, coming together from social businesses, non-governmental organisations, advocates, campaigns and dedicated individuals, this day emphasizes the integrity of a woman’s body and the dignity of menstruation.

Menstrual Hygiene Day will help to break the silence and build awareness about the fundamental role that good menstrual hygiene management plays in enabling women and girls to reach their full potential.

Menstrual hygiene and management is essential in ensuring that your everyday life is not interrupted by menstruation.Poor menstrual hygiene not only affects physical health, but also social and mental well-being, and thus a violation of the human right to health.

Such awareness will make women free and confident about their bodies and make them bold and vocal about these tabooed subjects. In addition to that, it will help confront myths, dispel cultural superstitions and shun the secrecy surrounding a topic that affects half of the world's population.
