London: A new study has suggested that treatment with high-potency statins offers a significantly improved chance of survival following a heart attack, slashing the risk of early death.

It is already known that statins, drugs used to lower cholesterol levels, cut deaths from heart disease and stroke as well as protecting against serious infections and respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, the Daily Express reported.

However, researchers have now found that taking a more potent form of the wonder drug can significantly improve survival rates for heart attack patients.

According to professor Chim Lang , who led the research, the pill should be handed out to patients routinely after a heart attack.

The study examined data from thousands of UK patients and showed those treated with high-potency statins had a 28 percent lower risk of dying within three years of their first heart attack.
