Orissa government on Tuesday banned mobile phones in college campus.

Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: Orissa government on Tuesday
banned mobile phones in college campus.

"The mobile phones are found to be a disturbing element
in college campus. Therefore, we have banned it in the
campus", said Higher Education minister Samir Dey adding that
the order would be implemented in both government and
non-government colleges across the state.

The minister said neither the students nor the teachers
would be allowed to carry mobile phone to the campus.

"The students who are found to be carrying mobile phone
will be fined", Dey said.

Claiming that the government's decision to ban mobile
phone in college campuses, has public support, the minister
pointed out that mobile phone disturbs the entire class when
one set rings.

Besides creating disturbance in class rooms, mobile
phones are also found to be misused by some students.

"Mobile sets are now a means of harassing girl students.
Some times, some male students take picture of girls by using
camera phones," a principal of a reputed college in the city
pointed out.

The teachers said though they were aware that mobile
phones create problem in campus, they cannot take action
against the erring students due to lack of order from the
state government.

"Now, with government banning mobile phones in campuses,
it will be easy for us to take action", said the principal.
