Puducherry, Oct 08: It was regrettable that not many candidates from Puducherry were holding civil services posts, despite the union territory making good progress in the
educational sector since 1954 and having all infrastructural sector, PMK parliamentary party leader M Ramadoss said today.

Inaugurating a private coaching institute to train students for the civil services exams here, he said that as a university teacher, he had felt that students of Pudhucherry
should emerge as IAS or IPS officers as there was no shortage of talent, capability or acumen among them. "What was lacking was the inner drive, orientation and ambition to rise in the civil services careers," he said.

It was also a pity to note that parents wanted their wards to become engineers, doctors or professionals in other careers. Despite Puducherry having a central university for the last 20 years, only two students (including a girl) had so far emerged as civil service personnel.

He asked the more than 350 students present to have total commitment and singleness of purpose and to shed their inferiority complex.

As a symbolic gesture, he handed over books to students at the inaugural function. The students included a visually challenged youth, currently doing M Phil in English
literature in Puducherry University.

Kavitha Ramanujam, a successful candidate from Pudukottai district in the civil service exam, gave tips to aspirants on the preparation for the examinations.

The founder of the institute, Janakiraman alias Kalladan also spoke.
