Meira Kumar visits flood-hit Bihar

Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar on Tuesday visited Bihar to monitor the flood situation in the state and inspect work at the relief camps run by her ministry.

and Empowerment Meira Kumar on Tuesday visited Bihar to monitor the
flood situation in the state and inspect work at the relief
camps run by her ministry.

Kumar, who represents Sasaram constituency in Bihar, left
for flood-affected regions of the state this morning. She will
visit flood-hit Saharsa and Supaul districts, a ministry
official said.

"The minister will also inspect the work being done in
the relief camps which are being run by the ministry," he
said.

The Union minister is accompanied by Secretary K M
Acharya and other senior officials of the ministry, he added.

Earlier, Kumar had contributed Rs 10 lakh from her MPLAD
fund for the national calamity in Bihar and donated her
one month salary towards the Bihar Chief Minister`s relief
fund for the flood victims.

The ministry had also sent a team of experts from
different units of National Institute of Mentally Handicapped
(NIMH), functioning under the ministry at Secunderabad in
Andhra Pradesh, Cuttack in Orissa and Kolkata in West Bengal
to the flood-affected areas in Bihar.

Caused by a breach in the east Kosi embankment at Kusaha
in Nepal on August 18, lakhs of people in Muzaffarpur,
Katihar, West Champaran, Khagaria, Sheikhpura, Saran,
Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Patna, Nalanda, Purnia,
Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura and Araria fell victim to the
massive floods with the last four bearing the major
brunt of the deluge.
