Normal life disrupted for 2nd day in Orissa due to rains

Incessant downpour and squally wind triggered by a deep depression over Bay of Bengal disrupted normal life for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in coastal Orissa even as the sea turned very rough.

Bhubaneswar, Sept 16: Incessant downpour and squally
wind triggered by a deep depression over Bay of Bengal
disrupted normal life for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in coastal Orissa even as the sea turned very rough.

As there was little respite from rains accompanied by
high-velocity wind, life was affected in the state capital and
adjoining districts of Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak,
Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara.

The depression over north west Bay of Bengal moved in a
north westerly direction and intensified into a deep
depression about 130 km south east of Chandbali, the Met office
here said.

The system, likely to intensify further, is expected to
trigger extremely heavy rains at isolated places with heavy to
very heavy rains at some places over the state during the next
36 hours, it said.

Under its impact, squally wind with speed reaching 55 to
65 km per hour from north westerly direction is likely to
prevail along and off Orissa coast, while the condition of the
sea remained very rough, the Met office said.

Low lying areas in several coastal districts were
inundated following steady downpour and fishermen were advised
not to venture into the sea.

Road traffic was affected at many places including the
capital city as several vehicles were stranded due to
water-logging, while office goers and students faced
difficulties in commuting because of inclement weather.

Panicked by high velocity wind and heavy downpour, over
2,500 residents of about 15 villages in Erasama, Balikuda and
Kujanga blocks of Jagatsinghpur district have shifted to
nearby cyclone centres.
