Shillong, Jan 07: The issue of change of leadership in Meghalaya was expected to be settled during the day as the two Congress high command leaders sent their reports to Delhi last night and its outcome was awaited.
CWC member and in-charge of party affairs in Meghalaya, Ramesh Chennithala, said that the leadership issue would be sorted out amicably by today.
Chief Minister Lapang, under pressure from a section of party MLAs to quit, said after a closed-door meeting with central leaders last night that he would abide by the high command's decision.
However, Central leaders Chennithala and AICC secretary Mabel Rebello were still holding talks with the disgruntled MLAs, coalition partners and state Congress unit president S C Marak besides Lapang.
The parleys lent credence to a reshuffle of the Cabinet by dropping some of the ministers and inducting disgruntled MLAs in their place. But no official confirmation was received in this regard so far.
Yesterday, both Chennithala and Rebello claimed to have made some 'headway' in their talks with the MLAs but refused to divulge any details.
In an apparent reference to the disgruntled MLAs' demands, Chennithala said Congress never wanted to 'shut' anybody's mouth but at the same time ensured discipline in the party. Nobody has crossed the Laxman Rekha of disciplinary yardstick, he said.
