Guru Gobind Singh's birthday celebrations in Amritsar

Amritsar, Jan 05 : Thousands of Sikhs in Amritsar are participating in Nagar Kirtan on the occassion of the birth anniversary of their 10th spiritual Guru Guru Gobind Singh.
Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and the last guru, converted the Sikhs into a militant community to combat the then Muslim rulers of the country. The Guru's birth anniversary commemorates the brave deeds of Guru Gobind Singh, who organised the Sikhs to protect their religious beliefs in the 17th century during the Mughal rule.
He baptised his supporters with sacred water stirred by a dagger. Those who were baptised were known as "Khalsa". All members of the "Khalsa" sect have to possess 5 Ks - Kesh, Kangha, Kirpan, Kachha and Kara.
