Kancheepuram, June 06: 30 people of Vedal village
near here have been arrested after they staged a Road Roko on
the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway yesterday, protesting
alleged police harassment.

The protestors, including five women, were arrested and
remanded to judicial custody by a court, police said today.

Earlier, police made a lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

The villagers alleged that police after dispersing them
entered their houses and beat up the inmates and broke the
window panes.

However, police said they only went to arrest those who
staged the Road Roko.

Trouble arose on Monday night when one of the villagers,
Sarathi, was caught by the police riding his two-wheeler on
the wrong side of the highway and pointed out that this was
the reason for many accidents.

Several villagers then rushed to the support of Sarathi
and were locked in a wordy duel.

The villagers said as they had to take a detour for a
U-turn to enter the highway, at times they were forced to
travel on the wrong side of the road.

As there had been similar incidents in the past too, the
villagers numbering around 60 yesterday blocked the road to
highlight their problem.
