New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has asked its officials to refrain from adversaries to the assessees.
The CBDT in a circular to its officials has also laid emphasis on cleanliness in office, punctuality, timeliness in appointment and avoiding unnecessary adjournments.
The department has also directed all senior officers to ensure that appeals are "filed only on the merits" and not "merely on the tax effect involved".
Though less than oneper cent of returns filed are selected for scrutiny, this area of work has often drawn adverse comments, CBDT said.
The officials have also been advised to enable an effective grievance redressal system in their jurisdictions.
