New Delhi: United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will step down from her post by the end of this year. Accepting her resignation, US President Donald Trump said, "Nikki Haley did an incredible job, she is leaving at the end of the year to take a break."

Haley, in a press conference, said that she will not be running for the president in 2020 and will support President Trump's reelection.

Haley - one of Trump's most trusted advisers - reportedly discussed her resignation with the President last week when she had visited him at the White House.

Taking to Twitter, Trump had earlier said, "Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 am."

46-year-old Haley was the senior most Indian-American official in the Trump administration.

The former governor of South Carolina was confirmed as UN Ambassador four days after Trump was inaugurated in January 2017.
