New Delhi: An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 jolted the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China near its border with Tajikistan on Thursday morning (February 23), according to Chinese State Media. However, the US Geological Survey reported that the quake was 6.8 magnitude and 20 kilometers (12 miles) below ground. It was 67 kilometers (41 miles) west of Murghob, Tajikistan which is the district capital with a population of a few thousand people high in the Pamir Mountains.

No casualties were reported so far. Further details are awaited.
