Etawah (Uttar Pradesh): A day after the humiliating defeat in the assembly elections, Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday made an impassioned appeal to the party workers not to blame his son Akhilesh for the outcome, saying “Nobody is responsible for the loss”.

The senior Yadav said it was party's failure that brought the debacle.

He refused to put the blame on the outgoing chief minister for the crushing defeat and said “It seems that we were unable to impress the people.”

Earlier in the day, his brother and party leader Shivpal Yadav said his party would thoroughly analyse the reasons for the dismal show.

"Politics is all about winning and losing. The Samajwadi Party has been through many struggles. We have struggled a lot and won several times.

“We will struggle yet again and win next time," Shivpal told ANI.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday stormed to power in a “historic” victory, sweeping 312 seats in the 403-member assembly.

The Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance could garner a minuscule 54.

The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party got just 19.
