Controversy over the national song in Meerut is not new. A proposal was recently floated in the Meerut Municipal Corporation House to terminate the membership of a group of Muslim councillors after the leaders staged a walkout when Vande Mataram was being played.
In Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar last week, Bajrang Dal members allegedly forced Muslims in in Uttar Pradesh to stand up for Vande Mataram and sing the national song.
While the Nagar Panchayat Muslim leaders refused agreed to stand for the song, they refused to sing it.
