Chennai: Senior Consular officials from the United States and Japan called on Chief Minister K Palaniswami at the Secretariat here on Friday.

The U.S. Embassy, New Delhi, Charge d' Affaires Marykay L Carlson and Acting Consul General David Ballard called on the Chief Minister, a press release said.

Separately, the Ambassador of Japan to India, Kenji Hiramatsu, Minister Political Affairs, Embassy of Japan, New Delhi, Hideki Asari, Japan Consulate in Chennai and Consul General Seiji Baba also called on Palaniswami.

The meetings with the Chief Minister was a "courtesy call", sources said.

The visit of the consular officials representing the two countries comes in the backdrop of the ongoing tri-Nation Malabar Naval Exercise which began on July 10.

In the 21st edition of Naval exercise, as many as 95 air crafts, 16 ships and two submarines from Japan, India and United States are taking part.

After completing the on-shore activities over the last three days, the joint naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal commenced today and would go on till July 17.

The at-sea exercise includes events such as submarine familiarisation, air defence exercises, medical evacuation drills, surface ware fare exercises, communication exercise and search and rescue operation.
