Tamil Nadu Minister D Jayakumar has said that the state has closed down 1,000 liquor shops.

Chennai: A young man committed suicide by hanging himself in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu as he was upset over his father`s drinking habit. In his suicide note, M Dinesh, 18, said that he was upset over his father Madasamy`s alcoholism and pleaded with him to quit drinking but to no avail, putting the family in financial distress.

Dinesh said his father should not participate in his funeral.

The young man also wrote that one has now to see whether liquor shops are shut down in Tamil Nadu.

Let us see if the CM closes down Tasmac liquor shops in Tamil Nadu. If not, my spirit will destroy the shops,” the note written in Tamil further says, The Times of India reported. Apart from the suicide note, the bag reportedly contained a damaged mobile phone, his NEET examination hall ticket and SSLC mark sheet.

Dinesh was the eldest of the three children. His mother, Esakiammal is said to have died nine years ago, after which his father married again. The boy's brother, Esakiraj, is studying in class 8 and his sister, Dhanushree, in class 7.

Dinesh is said to have been brought up by his paternal uncle Sankarakuthalam in Madurai after his mother's death and his brother and sister lived with their stepmother in their native village.

Reacting to the suicide, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said the state government should implement total prohibition in the state, as per IANS.

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that the state had closed down 1,000 liquor shops, adding that the problem of alcoholism could be resolved only when people decide to abstain from drinking.
