Chennai: Chennai police on Sunday impounded 10 high-end sports cars worth nearly Rs 30 crore allegedly used in racing.

Those involved in the illegal racing are said to be less than 30 years old and have been booked for rash and negligent driving.

Among the cars impounded were a Mercedes Benz AMG GT, Lamborghini Huracan and Lamborghini Aventador. The police claim that the drivers were allegedly involved in racing on the ECR road, which connects Chennai to Mahabalipuram, at around 7AM.

"They were driving at around 150 km an hour. The maximum permissible speed is only 60 km in city limits. Besides, they triggered panic by creating high decibel noise on the highway as they raced together," quoted a senior Police officer to NDTV.

One of the men identified as Raghav Krishnan driving a Lamborghini was detained by the police after he had allegedly ran over a police inspectors foot.

The police had recived several complaints by residents about car racing on the ECR road following which the cars were stopped at Uthandi toll gate for nearly 4 hours after which they were transferred to Kanathur police station.
