India 2019 thermal coal imports rise 12.6% to nearly 200 million tonnes, says government

Imports of thermal coal - mainly used for power generation - jumped 12.6% to 197.84 million tonnes in 2019. However, imports of coking coal - used mainly in the manufacturing of steel - fell marginally, following two straight years of increase, government data showed.

India to stop thermal coal imports; save Rs 40,000 cr

In view of rising production of the dry fuel, India plans to completely stop thermal coal imports in 2-3 years that would result in annual savings of Rs 40,000 crore, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said.
