No detention policy scrapped: Students of Classes 5 and 8 can be failed

Referring to the no-detention policy in the Act, HRD Minister Javadekar said "schools have become only schools for mid-day meal as education and learning are missing".

Neither detentions nor the no-detention policy address the quality of learning that children receive in schools. That is why we are failing our children.

No-detention policy to go from next academic year: Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey

Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, no child admitted in a school will be held back in any class or expelled till the completion of elementary education covering classes 1 to 8.

No Detention Policy: Centre may leave decision on states

States may soon overturn the policy of "No Detention" upto class VIII as a top advisory board on education on Tuesday left the decision on the issue to their discretion, while the HRD Ministry will soon take a call on compulsory examination for class X under the CBSE.
