An estimated 16 million tonnes of mud containing massive, "semi-infinite" stores of valuable rare earth minerals, found in a small Japanese island in the Pacific Ocean could alter global economy, a new study has revealed.

6.1 quake hits off northern Japan

A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido today, the US Geological Survey said. The quake hit off the west coast of the island, about 170 kilometres north of Sapporo, at a relatively deep 236 kilometres.
