In Pics: Joe Root celebrates 100th Test with ton, puts England on top

England skipper Joe Root became only the 10th batsman to score a century in his 100th Test match as his unbeaten 128 put the visitors in strong position at 263/3 against India after Day One of the first Test in Chennai on Friday. Root put on 200 runs for the third wicket with opener Dominic Sibley, who was dismissed in the final over of day's play for 87. Jasprit Bumrah, playing his first Test at home after 17 Tests, picked up two wickets including that of Sibley to give some cheer to India. India vs England 1st Test: Joe Root century and 200 partnership with Sibley put visitors in charge

Jasprit Bumrah ended up with two wickets in his maiden appearance in a Test match on Indian soil, finishing with 2/40 in 18.3 overs. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the only other wicket-taker, scalping 1/68 in 24 overs. The day, however, belonged to the England skipper Root who notched up his third hundred in three Tests in 2021.
