New Delhi: The first city-based professional league in the world, International Premier Tennis League, is all set to kick-start from November 28th, which will be played across four countries in the Asian continent.
Even before the start of its inaugural season, the tournament has already started gaining popularity because of the big names that are taking part in its first edition, which includes Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras to name a few.
The 16-day long event has four franchises – Indian Aces (India), Singapore Slammers (Singapore), Manila Mavericks (Philippines) and UAE Royals (UAE), and will be played across four legs in four different countries.
All participating teams in the IPTL compete in 24 matches across 5 single-set matches in a Round-Robin format. And as one of its leg is in India, which is scheduled to take place from December 6 to 8, it will certainly mark a new chapter in Indian tennis.
But the biggest question that raises here is, can this event even help Indian tennis to grow?
Unlike other franchise-based events, taking place in India, like Indian Premier League, Indian Badminton League, Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League; IPTL won't help Indian players, especially youngsters to compete against or along with the world best players.
It's looking more of a showcase event which would certainly give the Indian tennis fans a golden opportunity to watch their tennis stars play live, but it won't offer much to Indian tennis.
