Aus Open, Day 9: Sania Mirza celebrates Padma Bhushan award with 34th consecutive doubles win

New Delhi: In red-hot form, Sania Miza and partner Martina Hingis beat the Anna-Lena Groenefeld-Coco Vandeweghe pair to enter the semi-final of the Australian Open 2016.

The Indo-Swiss dropped a set, as they completed a 6-2 4-6 6-1 win in the quarter-final.

This was their 34th win on the trot. The duo is now 11 shy of breaking the all-time record for most consecutive win in women's doubles set by Czech pair of Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova (44) in 1990.

Winner of the match between Karolina Pliskova-Julia Goerges and Vania King-AllaKudryavtseva will play against the number one seeds in the next round.

It was announced on Monday that Sania would be conferred with India's third highest civilian honor - Padma Bhushan.

Sania and Hingis have had a dream run after teaming up in 2015. The duo has won  10 WTA doubles titles and two Grand Slams (US Open, Wimbledon).
