Rio De Janeiro: Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar stole the limelight on Day 9 of Rio Olympics 2016 as big stars crashed out of the mega event.

Dipa, who became the first Indian athlete to reach a vault final, won millions of hearts by executing the Produnova once again in style.

Even though the 23-year-old finished fourth, her effort was laudable considering it was her first Olympic event.

Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu were two another shuttlers who pulled off a win on Day 9.

Srikanth defeated Henri Hurskainen of Sweden 21-6, 21-18 in his group H preliminaries match. He had earlier beaten Lino Munoz of Mexico 2-0 in his opening match of the quadrennial event.

PV Sindhu, on the other hand, survived a tough match.

In Group M women’s singles, Sindhu pulled off a 19-21 21-15 21-17 win over Glasgow Commonwealth Games champion Li Michelle in a match that lasted for 72 minutes.

Barring these performances, it was a disappointing day for Indian athletes as big names were knocked out of the tournament one after the other.

Badminton: In a shocking result, ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal suffered a 21-18, 21-19 defeat by Ukrainian shuttler Maria Ulitina.

Tennis: Sania Mirza-Rohan Bopanna pair, who were up against Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka and Radek Stepanek, lost 6-1, 7-5 in the bronze medal match.

Hockey: Men's hockey team's campaign also came to an end with a 3-1 defeat against Belgium.

Boxing: Manoj Kumar crashed out with a 0-3 loss to Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan in the men`s Light Welterweight (64kg) category.

Shooting: Gagan Narang and Chain Singh failed to qualify for the final round of the men`s 50 metre Rifle event.

Athletics: In the women`s marathon on Sunday as O.P. Jaisha finished in the 89th position, while her compatriot Kavita Raut finished 120th at the Olympic Games here.

Golf: S.S.P. Chawrasia endured a horrendous final round of seven-over 78 to drop 28 places to finish tied 50th, while compatriot Anirban Lahiri closed with a 72 to be 57th.
