New Delhi: The Delhi HC on Wednesday has barred former Commonwealth Games chief Suresh Kalmadi from attending London Olympics in official capacity.
Court barred him from attending the opening ceremony and also stated that Kalmadi could not attend any game in official capacity. The court also said that the former CWG chief could not leave the country before July 27.
Earlier, the Delhi HC on Tuesday had reserved its order till Wednesday to allow sacked former Common Wealth Games chief Suresh Kalmadi to travel to London for the Olympics beginning from Friday.
A PIL was filed by advocate Mr Rahul Mehra who had sought the court`s direction to restrain Mr Kalmadi from going to London on the ground that he is facing trial in a corruption case and cannot be allowed to represent the country in an international event.
Clean Sports India, a movement for corruption-free sports in the country, had written a letter to IOC, requesting it to cancel Kalmadi’s accreditation for the Games.
"This move of him going to London, while his prosecution/ trial is under progress, has generated huge public outrage in India. We would request you to kindly bring it to the notice of the organising committee of London Olympics 2012 that Mr. Kalmadi visiting London to attend the Games can have serious consequences," CSI had said in the letter signed by its convenor BVP Rao and acting president Ashwini Nachappa.
