New Delhi: A list of 55-man global superstars was announced by the FIFPro for the World XI 2016 with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo leading the shortlist even as Wayne Rooney missed the cut for the first time since its inception in 2005.

Unlike other global awards, FIFA FIFPro World XI is decided by the players, for the players and the process involves more than 25,000 professional footballers from over 75 different countries.

Each player selects one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards for traditional 4-3-3 format.

FIFPro is the world players’ union, and it started its own selection for a world XI in 2005. It joined FIFA in 2009 thus changing the name to FIFA FIFPro World XI.
