New Delhi: English Premier League's summer transfer turned out to be the richest in the history of the League as the total spending for the calendar year reached £1bn for the first time, as per a report in BBC.
Manchester City, who spent 55m for Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg and £49m for Raheem Sterling from Liverpool, emerged out as the biggest spenders.
In fact, The Citizens broke their club record twice this summer to bring De Bruyne and Sterling to Etihad stadium and became England's highest gross spenders in a single window.
However, the last minute signing of Monaco's Anthony Martial by Manchester United, who spent £36m for the teenager, proved to be the biggest deadline-day move.
The report also claimed that the four Premier League clubs competing in this season's Champions League - City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal - had a combined gross transfer spend of around £340m, representing around 40% of the aggregate gross transfer spend by Premier League clubs.
