Louis van Gaal: Manchester United manager could go for striking hunt in January

New Delhi: With only a paltry 22 goals scored in 19 games in the Premier League, Manchester United are in dire need of some vitality in their strike force.

Wayne Rooney has failed to lead the line upfront and his diminishing legs coupled with lack of confidence has hurt the team. Youngster Anthony Martial has been promising but he has just scored four goals in the EPL.

Gaal's decision to load off four strikers in the summer transfer window including Javier Hernandez who has been a revelation for his new club Bayer Leverkusen. Despite spending a whooping GBP 250m on transfers, Gaal's team lacks balance and is short upfront.\

Academy player Will Keane is called back from his loan and his option is United's third choice at the moment.

United need some proven potency who can register goals consistently and it is unlikely some big names may appear in the January transfer window.

With already the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku playing some major roles for their respective clubs, it will be difficult to prize them away in this time of the season.

Gaal believes his side is good enough to get goals, but 10 from last 14 games with very little shots on-target means he could be forced to consider options.

United are on a winless streak of eight games on the trot and Gaal is in added pressure.

United host Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
