Louis van Gaal: How Dutchman left his previous jobs in club football

New Delhi: In this season of managerial merry-go-round, bookmakers have slashed odds on Louis van Gaal to be sacked as Manchester United boss.

With the Red Devils failing to churn out results, the Old Trafford management is expected to act soon with regards to their manager's future.

With Jose Mourinho unemployed, Ed Woodward could be tempted to terminate Van Gaal's three-year contract, which is currently in its second year.

However, many believe that the 64-year-old Gaal will resign from his position before he gets the boot from his employers.

In order to understand how the situation is likely to pan out, here is how the iconic Dutchman has ended his previous associations with football clubs.

Ajax (1991-97): Resigned

Van Gaal emerged as a managerial maverick at Ajax where he won the Champions League with a relatively young side. He enjoyed six successful seasons in Amsterdam before letting his contract expire.

Barcelona (1997-00): Resigned

Van Gaal resigned as Barcelona head coach after three years in charge. He blamed the press for his decision to leave the Catalan giants.

Barcelona (2002-03): Sacked

The Dutchman returned to Barcelona in 2002. However, he was sacked when the team slumped to 12th on the La Liga table. At the time of his departure, Barcelona were just three points above the drop zone.

AZ Alkmaar (2005-09): Resigned

His return to Holland was a successful one. The Dutchman won the league title with AZ, beating established powerhouses in the Eredivisie. He resigned in 2009 to opt for a career in Germany.

Bayern Munich (2012-14): Sacked

Van Gaal delivered the Bundesliga title and German Cup in his debut season with the Bavarian giants. However, it all went downhill from there onwards as the team failed to compete for silverware in the second season. Having run out of patience with Van Gaal's philosophy, the Bayern Munich management sacked him in March.
