New Delhi: Just like Brendon McCullum's last career ODI, his final Test too witnessed a major umpiring controversy.
While the New Zealand skipper had nothing to do with it, his counterpart Steve Smith and pacer Josh Hazlewood were at its center.
According to a report on ESPNCricinfo, the incident occurred in the final over before lunch on Day 4 of the 2nd Test in Christchurch.
The Aussies appealed for a LBW against Kane Williamson after Hazlewood's yorker length delivery appeared to have rapped him on the pads.
The on-field umpire Ranmore Martinesz ruled not out, compelling Smith to go upstairs to Richard Illingworth for a review.
A small mark on the bottom of the bat was noticed on the Hot Spot, which meant the initial decision of Martinesz was right and Illingworth communicated this to him.
However, the Australians were not happy with the third umpire's decision as they felt the mark shown on Hot Spot was actually Williamson's bat hitting his boot.
A visibly upset Smith headed towards Martinesz to make a protest, while the bowler Hazlewood was head saying "Who the f*** is the third umpire?" on the stump microphone.
This behavior from the Aussies not only drew flak from fans but also the commentators.
"You live by the sword, you die by the sword. It's not this man's fault. He gave it not out, you asked, they provided the evidence. He does not deserve a grilling out there," said Ian Smith.
While Mark Richardson branded the visitors' actions as 'intolerable'.
Hazlewood and Smith are likely to come under scrutiny from the match referee Chris Broad.
