New Delhi: Unmukt Chand might have succeeded in one front – bringing home the world cup- but the U-19 captain seemed to have failed in another – academics.

Chand, who is pursuing graduation from Delhi University’s St. Stephen’s College, was barred from writing exams on account of his low attendance.

“He is a bright boy and has made the country proud but he had just 8% attendance in college. I am just following university guidelines and he is not fulfilling the conditions for promotion,” principal of St Stephen’s College Valson Thampu was quoted as saying by a leading daily.

The World cup winning captain had earlier approached the Delhi High Court after the college refused to issue him an admit card for the exams. He was allowed to sit for the second semester but was able to write only two out of the four papers as he was late in approaching the court.

An Association of Old Stephanians has supported Chand, criticising the attitude of the college towards sportspersons.

The association has also appealed to the University to take appropriate steps necessary to provide encouragement to budding sportspersons.
