Sri Lanka registered a comfortable 19-run win over England thus booking themselves a semi-final berth and eliminating the defending ICC World T20 champions from the tournament also taking West Indies to the semis from their group.

Swann got three boundaries of Malinga’s over to reignite some life into the England batting and then sent a Mendis delivery high over the cow corner for a six. Malinga’s over yielded 15 runs and Mendis’s yeielded 11 runs. With 33 required off 2 overs, Malinga came in to bowl his last over of the spell and Swann hit the first ball to a boundary straight over the bolwer’s head. 50 runs partnership came up for the duo of Patel and Swann in 26 balls in the 19th over. Malinga got the wicket Samit Patel uprooting the all-rounders’ off-stump with a full toss. Patel went for a well made 67. That was Malinga’s 5th wicket of the match. Swann departed in the final over as Kulasekara ended his little cameo off 34 runs in 20 balls by uprooting the leg stump. In the end Enga;nd fell short by 19 runs. Sri Lanka with this win qualified for the semi-finals taking West indies to the semis as well with them.

Sri Lanka got the big wicket of Eoin Morgan in the 11th over as Akhila Dananjaya got the wicket. Morgan was adjudged LBW while attempting a reverse sweep. Ravi Bopara also departed cheaply for one run as he was castled by a quicker one by Jeevan Mendis. Samit Patel though played well even though wickets kept tumbling at the other end scoring a half century. Malinga who got three wickets in his 1st over scalped Jos Buttler who went for a pull managing to find Ajantha Mendis at fine leg. Dananjaya then scalped Stuart Broad but Samit Patel heaved a big six and a four off the right-arm offbreak bowler. England scored 35 runs during 11-15 overs but lost 4 wickets.

Samit Patel and Eoin Morgan, the best players of spin in the England batting line-up kept the run-rate moving scoring an impressive 44 runs in 5 overs. Both Patel and Morgan used their feet reaching the pitch of the ball cracking Kulasekara for two boundaries in an over. Patel then stuck three boundaries off Ajantha Mendis’s over.

In the absence of Craig Keiswetter, Luke Wright came out to open the innings along with Alex Hales as Angelo Mathews started off the proceedings for the hosts. After three dot balls, Wright whipped a short ball from Mathews for a boundary. Nuwan Kulasekara bowled the second over as Wright pulled another short delivery over mid-wicket for a six. But Malinga’s third over spelled doom as Wright departed courtesy a sharp catch at point by Dilshan as the opener went for a hard slash. After a mix-up in the middle by Hales and Bairstow, Malinga scalped the wicket of the keeper as he was deceived by a slower one and skied one in the air, the catch was taken by Kulasekara. In the very next ball Alex Hales departed LBW again owing to a slower delivery. Samit Patel then hit a straight six off Mathews in the 5th over as England scored 28 runs.

Sri Lanka finished the innings taking 47 runs of the final 5 overs losing three wickets to post a total of 168 for 7. Stuart Broad scalped the wickets of Jeevan Mendis (18) and Angelo Mathews who played a good cameo of 28 runs from 19 balls. Finn finished his quota of overs bowling the 17th over giving away just 4 runs. But Jade Dernbach was taken to the cleaners by Perera and Thirimanne who hit a six each in the over. Broad then came back to take the wicket of Thirimanne for 13 runs and Dernbach bowled the final over of the Lankan innings without conceding a boundary.

In the first two balls of the 11th over, Graeme Swann dismissed Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara to bring back England into the game but Jeevan Mendis crashed two boundaries in the same over. Angelo Mathews then smacked Broad for another couple of boundaries. Swann and Bopara then bowled two tidy overs not conceding a bouandary and giving away 14 runs. In the 15th, Mathews and Patel clobbered Samit Patel for two massive sixes as the Lankans got 47 runs in the 5 overs.

Mahela Jayawerdene (42*) looked in good touch as the hosts scored 33 runs in the five overs without losing any wicket. Stuart Broad bowled the last over of the batting powerplay conceding just three runs but Mahela Jayawardene scored a boundary behind point reverse sweeping Graeme Swann as the batting duo of Jayawardene and Sangakkara (13*) got 9 runs off the offie’s first over. Jayawardene reverse swept Swann again in his next over for another boundary. Ravi Bopara bowled a decent over conceding 4 runs. Samit Patel bowled the 10th over and conceded 10 runs off the over including two boundaries.

Sri Lanka were off to a good start after winning the toss accumulating 41 runs in the first 5 overs but lost the wicket of T Dilshan (16) in 3rd ball of the fourth over when Steve Finn trapped the opener leg before wicket. Mahela Jayawardene (16*), who is not captaining the side tonight was in the middle along with stand-in captain Kumar Sangakkara (6*). After a sedate start in the first three overs in which Dilshan was dropped by Swann in the first slip off the bowling Jade Dernbach in the 2nd over, Dilshan and Jayawardene smaked two sixes in the 4th over. But Steve Finn managed to take the wicket of DIlshan as he went for a big heave missing the line of the ball. The ball hit is back leg and Umpire Steve Davies adjudged it LBW. Kumar Sangakkara joined Jayawardene in the middle and got a boundary courtesy of an edge down to third man.

Their semifinal chances hanging by the thread, defending champions England are faced with a must-win situation as they take on unbeaten hosts Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 here on Monday.
England, after a win and a loss, have to clinch it against Sri Lanka to have any chance of making the last-four stage.
If Stuart Broad`s men lose on Monday, it would be certain elimination as Sri Lanka and West Indies, if they beat New Zealand on Monday, would go through at their expense.
England beat New Zealand in their previous match with Steven Finn and Luke Wright playing important roles. Finn achieved his as well as England`s best figures in the ICC World Twenty20 -- three for 16 -- before Wright hit a 43-ball 76.
But Sri Lanka is no New Zealand and Broad acknowledged that his team have a tough task at hand.
"It will be an electric atmosphere for us on Monday and it will be important for us to keep our composure," said Broad after the win on Saturday.
"It will be loud, it will be hectic and there will be a lot of fans shouting for Sri Lanka but that will be exciting for us."
Even though the batting clicked against New Zealand, the English still seem to be missing that one aggressor who can rescue them in tight situations.
