New Delhi: Suresh Raina-led Uttar Pradesh defeated two-time champions Baroda by 38 runs to claim their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title on Wednesday at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Raina, who was dropped from the Indian One-Day International squad for the Australia series, scored a fluent 37-ball 47 to help UP post 163 for the loss of seven wickets from 20 overs. Opener Prashant Gupta contributed with 49 runs, as other batsmen failed to score against Yusuf Pathan's side, which included the likes of Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel.

But UP's total proved enough as Baroda could make 125 runs only in the 20 overs losing seven wickets. Ankit Rajpoot took three wickets, while Amit Mishra and Kuldeep Yadav got a brace each. For Baroda, Soaeb Tai was the top-scorer with an unbeaten 26-run knock. All of Baroda top and middle order batsmen got the starts but failed to convert into any match-winning innings.

This is the seventh season of India's premier Twenty20 domestic tournament, and UP were the runners up two seasons ago. For Baroda, it was the third final in five seasons, having won it in 2012 and 14.
