New Delhi: Despite their team dominating hosts New Zealand in the 1st Test at Wellington, a feud between two legends has taken centre-stage in Australian cricket circles at the moment.
It all began when former spinner Shane Warne alleged that Steve Waugh was the most selfish cricketer he had played with during his celebrated Australian career.
Soon after, Waugh defended himself stating he had only performed his duty as skipper of the side with regards to dropping the leg-spinner in a 1999 Test against the West Indies.
While nobody has publicly backed Warne's claims, Waugh found support in Ryan Harris and Justin Langer.
On Saturday, another Aussie legend – Matthew Hayden differed with Warnie, stating his experience playing under Waugh was very different.
“My opinion of Steve Waugh is entirely different to Shane’s. I found Steve to be incredibly supportive,” the former left-hander wrote in his column for the NEWS.com.au
Hayden highlighted several instances wherein Waugh had stepped in to boost his morale especially when he was out of the team.
“Steve was a leader for the “little people” — he instilled confidence and made you believe because he himself believed that anything was possible,” he wrote further.
Earlier, Langer had publicly disapproved Warne's criticism of a former teammate.
“It is not the Australian way for an ex-teammate to criticize another, so that was very disappointing. Mates shouldn’t bag each other,” Langer told The Western Australian.
“We talk about the brotherhood of the baggy green because so few people are part of it,” he further added.
