Srikkanth faces axe after England debacle?

New Delhi: India’s ignominious 0-4 drubbing at the hand of England in the just-concluded Test series has put a question mark over Kris Srikkanth`s continuation as chairman of the national selection committee.

Sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that the chairman of selectors would definitely be under the scanner during the BCCI’s AGM scheduled to be held in Mumbai next month.

There is a strong lobby inside the board which wants Srikkanth to be sacked after the debacle in England. They even suggested former all-rounder Roger Binny’s name as his successor.

Srikkanth’s tenure as the chairman of selectors is over, and, if he continues, it will be an optional extension for one year.

Another factor that could go against Srikkanth is that he belongs to Tamil Nadu, which is also the home state of current BCCI secretary and president-elect N Srinivasan. Some members feel that Tamil Nadu has too many representatives holding top posts in BCCI.

Srikkanth was also accused of using his post to select his son Anirudh, who is not even a regular member of his state team, in the team for Emerging Players’ tournament a couple of months back.

The BCCI top brass, however, is not in favour of removing him just on the basis of the team’s performance in a particular series. They feel that the chairman of selectors has done a good job in the last couple of years. It’s under the same selection panel India won the 2011 World Cup as well as became the No. 1 Test side in the world.
