Ponting admits challenge of ‘scoring runs consistently’

Sydney: Out-of-form Australian batsman Ricky Ponting concedes that he and fellow veteran Michael Hussey need to find runs quickly to cement their place in the Test squad.

Ponting and Hussey are under intense pressure to retain their spots for the rest of the summer following worrying form slumps.

“With Huss and I both being guys that have been around a long time, and with the transitional phase the team’s going through, I think it’s important that guys like us are around,” a daily quoted Ponting, as saying.

“But at the same time we’ve got to be toeing the line and scoring runs consistently. Mike had done that up until the last couple of Tests, and I felt like I was getting back into a bit of rhythm before the Hobart game.”

“We all know what our jobs are. As international sportsmen these days you have to be performing day in, day out, and we’ve got that challenge ahead of us now,” he added.

Ponting has gone almost two years without a Test century, while Hussey returned averages of just 15 and 7.66 runs in recent series against South Africa and New Zealand.
