New Delhi:  Right through the process of finalizing India's new coach, Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri were tipped as the two main contenders for the job.

Sandeep Patil's name too did the rounds, but there was a unanimous feeling of it being a two-horse race.

It now now emerged that Shastri fell off the radar during the interview process. In fact, it was former Australian all-rounder Tom Moody who was Kumble's biggest challenger right till the very end.

"Both Kumble and Moody gave very impressive presentations. In fact, the Australian became a serious choice, given his coaching pedigree," a source close to the development told the Indian Express.

The work put in by Moody at SunRisers Hyderabad too could have weighed in on the minds of the CAC and BCCI.

Finally the Indian board ruled in favor of the legendary leg-spinner, a decision that pleased majority of Indian cricket stakeholders.

Kumble's first assignment is the tour of West Indies, where he will have an opportunity to work closely with his former Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Virat Kohli.
