India regain No. 1 spot in ICC Test rankings after South Africa's series defeat against England

New Delhi: Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team became the No. 1 Test team in the ICC rankings after South Africa's series loss against England on Saturday.

In December last year, India had defeated Proteas 3-0, ending their unbeaten nine-year winning streak away from home. After being thrashed by India in the series, South Africa just had a four-point lead in the points table. To retain the numero uno position, South Africa had to either draw or win the four-Test home series.

But that wasn't the case as the AB de Villiers-led side not only lost the third Test at Wanderers, but also the series after having lost the first Test.

India have performed brilliantly in whites ever since Kohli took over the captaincy from MS Dhoni. In 2015, the Delhi batsman first led led India to a 2-1 series win in Sri Lanka — India’s first Test series win in the country since 1993, and followed it with a thumping 3-0 series win against South Africa.
