New Delhi: Former India coach Greg Chappell on Sunday lauded the BCCI's decision to appoint Anil Kumble as the team's new head coach.
In a piece for The Hindu, the Aussie listed several qualities that made the legendary leg-spinner the perfect choice for the role.
However, he also made use of this opportunity to highlight the problems he faced during his tenure as India's coach.
With the exception of Rahul Dravid and Kumble, the 67-year-old took slammed the attitude of key players in the side.
"If they (Kumble and Dravid) had been blessed to have been surrounded by other selfless individuals whose only aim was to serve the team, the Indian teams in which they played would have been impossible to beat," he wrote.
Chappell also claimed that the Indian side tried to take short-cuts and failed to prepare diligently.
"Indian cricket has never reached the heights that it should because it has relied too much on natural ability and flair rather than diligent preparation. Too often in the past, Indian teams have tried to take short-cuts rather than work hard so any success has been fleeting," he added.
Before selecting Kumble for the coaching job, CAB president and CAC member Sourav Ganguly said he would not err in making another appointment like Chappell.
One wonders what the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and others will now have to say about Chappell's latest remarks.
