New Delhi: Former Pakistan cricketer Aquib Javed, who is currently coaching UAE, still oppose the return of Mohammad Amir to cricket as he said that the fixing incidents still hurts him.
While talking to The Indian Express, Javed, who was the then bowling coach of Pakistan when the match-fixing incident took place in 2010 during Lord’s Test, clearly told the newspaper that he felt betrayed.
“It was an ugly incident. I opposed his (Amir) return to cricket. I still oppose it. Everybody has his own idea and I’m entitled to mine.
“But he has returned after being in exile for five years. It is what the ICC felt. I have no problems because I will live with my belief, my idea. Hopefully he (and the others) would learn from his mistakes, but I still feel betrayed. It still hurts. It was really bad. I was heartbroken,” Javed told the newspaper.
Interestingly, there’s is a possibility that Amir might bump into his erstwhile bowling coach in Dhaka, where both the countries, Pakistan and UAE have come to participate in the on-going Asia Cup T20.
Amir served a five-year ban and jail time for indulging in spot-fixing.
However, Javed feels that Amir was a world-class bowler, when his wrongdoing shook the entire cricket world.
Remembering Amir talent, Javed said: “It was sad. Pakistan lost a world-class bowler. Greatness awaited him but his wrongdoing took him towards a sad ending. I hope he would be able to start it all over again.”
