New Delhi: Sim Bhullar on Wednesday became the first player of Indian descent to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA) often regarded as the pinnacle of competitive club basketball.

The Sacramento Kings back-up center made his debut with 16.1 seconds remaining into the Minnesota Timberwolves fixture in front of a cheering home crowd. He replaced Jason Thompson, but failed to attempt a shot during his short stay on the court. Kings won the match 116-111.

Bhullar, who was born in Ontario, Canada and had played in college at New Mexico State. The 7ft 5in signed a 10-day contract to join the Kings' roster.
