New Delhi: Indian badminton star Parupalli Kashyap suffered an injury blow putting his 2016 Rio Olympics qualification hopes in jeopardy.

Kashyap, 29, retired midway through his German Open pre-quarterfinal match against eighth seed Son Wan Ho of Korea on Thursday at the RWE-Sporthalle.

The Indian shuttler was making a return to international scene after recuperating from a calf injury, which forced him to miss out on the year-ending Dubai Superseries finals.

But the 2012 London Olympic Games quarterfinalist took part in the Premier Badminton League, representing his home town franchise, Hyderabad Hunters.

According to a report in PTI, the gravity of the injury is not yet known.

"He (Kashyap) is fine now but we are waiting for some tests. Only after that, we can say how much time would be needed for him to recover," physiotherapist Dr Johnson Solomon was quoted as saying in the report.

In between, India's campaign at German Open also ended with the defeat of PV Sindhu today. The seventh-seeded India lost to fourth seed Chiense Wang Shixian 16-21 18-21.

Earlier, World No. 10 Kidambi Srikanth, seeded sixth, also bowed out of the men's singles event after losing 21-18 18-21 18-21 to 12th seed NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong in another pre-quarterfinals match.
