Jagdish Chandra Bose: All you need to know about the crescograph inventor!

New Delhi: Jagdish Chandra Bose is one of India's greatest scientists who is best known for his work in biophysics and science of plants and made various contributions in the field of physics, biology and archaeology.

Here’s what you need to know about JC Bose:

• He was born on November 30, 1858, at Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh and raised in a home committed to pure Indian traditions and culture.
• The scientist studied physics at Calcutta university, went to Cambridge for his Bachelor’s degree, and returned to India in 1884 where he continued his research.
• Bose is known for his invention of crescograph, a device for measuring growth in plants, and also determines environment effects on vegetation. His invention helped scientists to better understand the cultivation of crops.
• A small impact crater on the far side of the Moon has been named after the scientists to recognise his achievements in the field of wireless telecommunications. It is located close to Crater Bhabha and Crater Adler and has a reported diameter of 91 kilometres.
• Besides being a physicist, biologist, biophysicist and botanist, he was also a writer which earned him the title 'Father of Bengali Science Fiction'.
• He died on November 23, 1937, at the age of 78 in India after suffering a heart attack.
• The scientist set up the Bose Institute in then Calcutta (now Kolkata), which is one of the oldest and premier research institutes in the country.
