An ex-comic actor and Russia's 'number one target', Volodymyr Zelenskiy is Ukraine's unlikely wartime leader

The 44-year-old swept to power in 2019 promising to end a war with Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

"The heroism of the President and his people in the defence of their country is awe-inspiring," said UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday (February 26) as he praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his citizens for fighting the Russian offensive. 

Boris joined several other leaders and people across the globe who have heaped praise on Zelenskiy, a former comic actor who has vowed to stay in Ukraine and fight the Russians.

Zelenskiy is an unlikely wartime leader.
