Rohit Sharma first to hit three double centuries
Indian Cricketer Rohit Sharma’s 264 off 173 balls tops the highest individual scores in One Day Internationals. The ‘Hitman’ had achieved this feat in 2014, when he hammered the Sri Lankan bowlers for a record 33 fours and nine sixes at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. He is also the only batsman to hit three double centuries in the history of the 50-over format. Rohit notched up his first double century in 2013, smashing the visiting Aussies for 209 runs off 158 balls at the Chinnaswamy Stadium to become the third batsman to hit the 200-run mark. Sachin Tendulkar first to hit Double Century
It all started in 2010. After 2962 One Day Internationals the world finally saw someone hit 200 runs in an ODI (Men’s). India had put up 385 runs on the board and South Africa’s Charl Langeveldt was gearing up to bowl the 49th over. MS Dhoni (batting at 53) drove Langeveldt over mid-wicket, the crowd roared as if a boundary had been hit. Gwalior was on its toes as Sachin Tendulkar squeezed a single behind point. Tendulkar unlaced his helmet and reached for the gods in his signature celebration, he had achieved the inevitable. Both Saeed Anwar (194) in 1997 and Charles Coventry (194) in 2009, had their chances but it took a special Sachin Tendulkar to scale the 200-run milestone. Photo: PTI
Virender Sehwag 219
The ‘Sultan of Multan’ and Nawab of Najafgarh, added another feather to his cap hitting 219 off 149 balls studded with 25 fours and 7 sixes at a staggering strike rate of 146.97 against West Indies in Indore on December 8 2011. Chris Gayle First to hit 200 in World Cup
By 2015, ODIs had already had four double centuries but none at the biggest stage. Until the ‘Universal Boss’ hit a 147-ball 215 against Zimbabwe in the 2015 World Cup. Chris Gayle’s double ton had surpassed the Gary Kirsten’s long-standing record (188 off 159 balls) for the highest individual score in a World Cup. Photo: Reuters
Martin Guptill Double Century in World Cup
A month later, Black Caps opener Martin Guptill fired 237* in 163 balls, steering his country into the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup. Guptill had hit 24 fours and 11 sixes to score the second double hundred at a World Cup. His 237* was the highest individual score in ODIs at the time and the highest at a World Cup, to date. Fakhar Zaman double hundred
The newbie of the double-centurions club, Fakhar Zaman tore into the Zimbabwe bowlers with his 156-ball 210 not out, breaking the 21-year-old record held by Saeed Anwar’s 194 for the highest ODI score by a Pakistani batsman.
