Kings XI Punjab beat Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets

Kings XI Punjab defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets to complete their third consecutive win. Shikhar Dhawan's majestic century earlier on, thus went in vain.

After the two quick wickets fell in the sixth over bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin, Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell joined forces at the crease, stitching a rapid 69-run stand for the fourth wicket.

After Pooran (53 off 28 balls) and Maxwell (32 off 24 balls) fell, only 17 were needed from the 24 balls which KXIP chased down easily, with an over to spare. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Nicholas Pooran leads Kings XI fightback with a rapid-fire fifty

Nicholas Pooran scored a rapid-fire fifty (53 off 28 balls; 4x6, 6x3) and launched a fine counter-attack for Kings XI after they had lost both Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal in the same over.

What Pooran did well was to ensure that KXIP kept scoring the boundaries and he never for once, let the run-rate drop.

He targetted the inexperienced Deshpande, scoring 15 runs against him and then racked-up 14 runs from the only over bowled by Marcus Stoinis. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Ashwin removes the dangerous Chris Gayle

Ravi Ashwin took the all important wicket of Chris Gayle, who had hammered Tushar Deshpande for 26 runs in the previous over.

Ashwin, who has a history of success against Gayle, came around the wicket and Gayle was outfoxed in the flight itself - the ball came angling in and disturbed the stumps. Gayle made 29 off just 13 balls.

Later on, in the same over, Mayank Agarwal was run-out after a terrible mix-up with Nicholas Pooran. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

KXIP skipper KL Rahul falls early

Kings XI Punjab skipper and Orange Cap holder KL Rahul departed early, making just 15 runs.

He was dismissed in just the third over with Axar Patel taking the prized wicket. He tried to go over the top against Axar Patel but handed a straight catch to Daniel Sams at mid-on. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Delhi Capitals have posted a solid total of 164/5. It was ultimately Dhawan single-handely taking Delhi to that total but apart from Dhawan, Kings XI bowled wonderfully well.

They pegged Delhi back in the middle overs and none of the Capitals' players could get going apart from Dhawan.

Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers with a spell of 4-0-28-2. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Dhawan becomes first player to score back to back centuries in IPL history

Shikhar Dhawan scored a majestic 106 (off 61 balls; 4x12, 6x3).

Shikhar Dhawan scored his second consecutive century after having scored 101* in his side's last outing against CSK. He thus became the first ever player in IPL history to reach such a feat. He does so with a double against Arshdeep in the penultimate over. He Reacheed the mark in just 57 balls.

He was in brilliant touch right from the start and no KXIP bowler troubled him. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Maxwell removes the dangerous Rishabh Pant

The Capitals sent in Rishabh Pant at the number four spot to change things up. This would give Pant the time to settle in, so that he could go for the big hits in the end.

The move, though, didn't pay-off as Pant looked very rusty during his stay. He had missed a few games because of a hamstring injury and was returning to the playing XI. He was dismissed by Maxwell for a paltry 14 off 20 balls. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)

Shikhar Dhawan scores a rapid half-century

Shikhar Dhawan continued his brilliant run with the bat. He had scored his maiden IPL century in Capitals' last outing against CSK.

Jimmy Neesham removes Shaw, gives opening breakthrough to KXIP

Prithvi Shaw's dismal run with the bat continued. He was dismissed by Jimmy Neesham. It was a horrendous shot from Prithi and he payed the price.

It was a wide ball at good length and Shaw heaved at it but the ball took a thick inside edge and goes straight up. Maxwell takes an easy catch at extra cover.

Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bat first.

Delhi Capitals came into the game on the back of two wins on the trot. But still, they made three changes to their playing XI.

Rishabh Pant, Shemron Hetmyer and Daniel Sams replaced Alex Carey, Ajinkya Rahane and Anrich Nortje respectively. While Delhi were boosted by the return of Pant, Nortje being replaced came as a surprise.

Kings XI Punjab playing XI

Delhi Capitals won the toss and opted to bat first.

Kings XI Punjab made just one change to their playing XI. They brought in all-rounder Jimmy Neesham to replace pacer Chris Jordan. This was a very surprising move as Chris Jordan had a phenomenal game in KXIP's thrilling second Super Over win over Mumbai Indians.

It wasn't clear at the start of the game whether this was a tactical decision or if Jordan was out with an injury.

Jordan is renowned for his death bowling. (Image Credits: Twitter/@IPL)
