Devotees during Shahi Snan on April 27
On the occasion of 'Chaitra Purnima' on Tuesday (April 27), devotees took a holy dip in the Ganga river at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar amid the ongoing Kumbh Mela. However, very few devotees participated in the 'Shahi Snan' due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 17 had appealed that the Kumbh Mela 'should now only be symbolic amid the coronavirus crisis'.

Niranjani Akhada, one of the 13 akhadas of seers participating in the Haridwar Kumbh decided to exit the event in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the state. Mahamandaleshwar of Maha Nirwani Akhada from Madhya Pradesh Swami Kapil Dev who was suffering from the coronavirus died at a private hospital here on April 13.

A total of 1,701 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Haridwar Kumbh Mela from April 10 to 14, as per reports. The numbers include both RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test reports of devotees and seers of different akharas (ascetic groups) over the five-day period in the entire Mela Kshetra extending from Haridwar to Devprayag, Haridwar Chief Medical Officer Shambhu Kumar Jha said on Thursday (April 15).
